Did he say "Dada"? Maybe. Maybe not. But don't wait for the words to find out. Here’s how to help your baby communicate with you now.

My 18th month old is starting to understand words. He can say some but not all, but were workking with him so hopefully by the time he hits 19 months he should be talking.

Very good information. I imitate her she laughs I also try to make her say words and she just looks at me and laughs so I hope one of these days she will say something back.

My 14 year old daughter and 16 yr son tried having our new baby feel her lips as she tries to teach her a new word and it seams to work for the most part I think it helps her know how to move her mouth for curtain words. Our baby is 12 months and has a pretty big vocabul. It may be just the help of older siblings

I mimic my baby's sounds but also try to change them in small ways to encourage her to widen her sound vocabulary and learn new ones. So far it's worked. No words yet though.

My son is 5 months old and he makes a lot of noises. I thought i was being silly by repeating them to him and getting excited wen i do. But this article made me feel no so silly! Its fun to "talk" with your baby. If you havent give it a try!

If you like what your reading here, you should buy the book: 'Great Expectations: Baby’s First Year' - very interesting and helpful book for first time parents.

I've never baby talked to my daughter she does enough of that and I don't see the point if you want your child to use real words then you should talk to them with real words

I have heard that signing can slow down how quickly one's baby begins talking, even if they are beginning to make out new sounds. Is this true and, if so, are there ways to help prevent delayed speech but also teach signing?

It is so important to speak in normal everyday tones with your baby. They learn so much so quickly. It certainly helps us moms to keep some semblance of sanity as well.

Signing helps them learn to speak if you include the words with it. So try to always say the words you are signing.

we find that with lots of repetition and exaggeration, our six month old picks up on things very quickly and either does what we ask (such as "give mommy the baby" and she reaches) or mimics our sounds.
