We never established a bedtime routine that we were able to stick to with our daughter mostly due to night terrors that started out of no where..our only solution was her sleeping with us, but she is now going to be 2 yrs old and we are paying the price. Especially now she cannot and will not lay down on her own and getting her to sleep requires either mommy and/or daddy laying down with her. I love that she wants us with her, but then again I would really like for her to be able to sleep and feel safe on her own without us being right next to her. Its up and down all the time, hopefully these tips will help us all! Thank you

My son is our fourth and final baby and our home is to small, our older boys share a room already and our daughters room is small so he shares a room with mommy and daddy. He has his own crib but refuses to sleep in it and has pretty much from day 1 and it's my fault I let him sleep with us but I wanted to sleep at night. Now my husband and I would like our bed back to our selves but I can not get him to sleep in his crib. I have let him fall asleep with me in bed or in the recliner and then lay him in his crib only for him to wake up less then an half hour later and screams and screams. I unlike my husband can not sleep threw it. I have tried laying him in his crib to put his self to sleep while I am still up but he just stands in it screaming! I don't know what to do!

We never established a bedtime routine other than laying down with our daughter, she is now 2 1/2 yrs old and we are paying the price. She cannot and will not lay down on her own and getting her to sleep requires both her mommy and daddy singing and laying down with her. I love that she needs us, but I would really like some nights for her to go to sleep easier and by herself.

Review 4 for 8 Sleep Tips For Every Child

My son figts sleep. Not only does he fight sleep, he often refuses it. Sleeping became more difficult a few months agao when he started crawling out of his crib. He will not sleep in his converted crib. We now have a "coo" racecar bed he only sleeps in if I fall asleep with him. He has the same bed time...he only needs about 7-8hours sleep and a 2hour nap. Any suggestions on how to make a room more comfortable? He has tons of blankets he kicks off. We added a fan his grandma introduced for some white noise and it kind of works. His puppy, we thought, would help him sleep in his room again alone but I still have to disturb them to let her out a couple times a night. He has a night light and a sleep turtle with stars and a moon he can turn on yet all those things don't keep him asleep. He's so wrestless. He often wakes up to come into my room. I've read all the articles. Any other suggestions? There are a few in here I haven't tried.

My daughter who is just about a year and a half has always has been one to rely on us to fall asleep (more fault of our own). My husband would hold her for naps and I would nurse her to sleep. Once she was 8 mo, even though she had a consistent nap and bed time schedule and routine, we eventually had to help her learn to fall a sleep on her own. That is without any props, me, my husband (no pacifier, no bottle, no rocking to sleep). It worked. It was very hard, on me mostly, but she had to cry until she learned to self-sooth. What I am learning now that she is a toddler, it is hard to rienforce that again say after she's been sick or more reciently when we were without power and heat and she ended up in bed with me nursing. She now wakes at night wanting us to help her back to sleep. I think this is the toughest part, when to let them work it out on their own because they NEED to. Establish the routines, stay close to them as you can, do not let your baby stay up so late where you can never establish a healthy sleep rythm, and be firm in letting them fall asleep for themselves. There are still nights that I have to go in her room and settle her. But now that she understands, one more time and all done, she knows it is her job to settle-in and relax on her own and for nap time, she goes right in her crib, snuggles right in and sleeps. I hope this helps some parents out there who are stuggling with thier kid and sleep. I understand how hard and frustating it can be.

These are excellent tips! Thank you. My son is 1 1/2 and he pretty much decided his own sleep schedule. He goes to sleep at midnight and wakes up at noon every day. I dont like that and I have tried changing it so he will go to sleep earlier but no luck. He will not sleep if he is not tired. Maybe when he is older he will listen to me and try to sleep when I put him to bed...

The article was great. My son is sometimes falling asleep as late as 10:00pm. I dim the lights, I put his tv shows on and he still continues to play.. If I lay him down he will cry if he is not tired. Also he was sleeping in his crib since birth, he has a big beautiful room of his home but he refuses to even take naps in the crib.. Resulting in him sleeping in the bed with me EVERY NIGHT!!!! ughh.. any help??

This was helpful however I was told once in awahile a kids biological clock has to rest so sometimes they wont go to bed on time. Also how do you get a kid to take regular nap time when she won't? she's on a regular bedtime and a regular time to wake up.

I've really been having a hard time to keep my son on a regular schedule. After reading this article i found some helpful hints on how to get him to nap at a certain time and such. Between school and work, i need some time to sit down and relax and having Kyler sleeping for an hour or two is perfect. Any little advice will help so much.

Routine is everything when you are doing anything with your toddler including putting them to bed. I've learned this from babysitting other kids. My daughter is almost two years old and her father and i don't have a bedtime routine for her just for the simple fact that she is sleeping with us in our room. We live in a house with four other people and because of this our daughter has to share the same room as my husband and I. Don't get me wrong, I'm a good mom and I've always wanted and try to a routine on some things but bedtime is the hardest. She started off sleeping in her up until she could stand up and then when she noticed us over in our bed she since then has been sleeping with us. There are times when we can get her to sleep in her bed but most of the time she is in the middle next to me and my husband. So, here is the question of the day? What do you do when you do get your toddler in their own room on how to get them to sleep at night.

Routine is everything! We started a bedtime routine of bath, massage and bed when our daughter was 2 months old. By 3 1/2 months she was sleeping through the night and at almost 2 years old she literally runs up the stairs when we tell her it's bath time! She sleeps consistently 11 hours through the night and even though she sometimes procrastinates with and extra story she never fusses when we tuck her in and say goodnight!
