my son is 7 months old now and has been on a sippy cup for 2 months already! i recommended starting early and using the sippy cups with the soft nipples first, then gradually move up! GOOD LUCK to all moms and dads as well

My son is 2 and a half and we can't wean him from his bottle. He uses it as a security and I just don't know what I should do. I mean we have tried everything. We tried just taking it away, he cried for all night and all day. I never thought a child could go 24 hours without sleeping but this little guy did. We have tried training cups, he just throws them. I just don't know. Any advice?

All great ideas. My daughters were all easy to wean from the breast at 5 months and the bottle by 12 months. My son has been difficult. He refused to take a bottle from the first time I introduced it with breastmilk - I even had my husband feed him while I left the house and he still refused. I tried several different brands of bottles and he hated them all. I tried several kinds of formula hoping he would take to one. Still no luck. It took several tries to finally find a sippy he would take when he was a little older. Now he is 17 months and still nursing. He will drink cow's milk, juice, and water from his cups but still wants to nurse before naps and at bedtime. I have been having a difficult time keeping him from late night feedings as well. My son is a total "booby-boy" and I am having a heck of a time weaning him. I will give some of the suggestion a shot, but I don't have a lot of confidence as I have already tried a couple of them with no luck. I love my son, but he needs to be weaned (months ago). Thank you.

My thirteen month old struggles to fall back asleep at night with out nursing. I really hope we can find an alternative that won't be so difficult on her.

Those are good ideas, but what if he wants to nurse to fall asleep? I'm trying to introduce formula and cows milk, but he only drinks a few sips. I'll try reading to him.

I've been able to cut her down to just at nap time and night time. i've tried to gradually introduce a a sippy cup/bottle of pumped or cows milk, to get her away from the breast. but she fights and screams. distractions dont work either. unless we are out side during nap time, then she falls out ( in her stroller) without issue. i just dont know what to do....

I tried to wean my daughter at around 14 months by slowly taking away her nursing during the day, which was fine until I started cutting back at night-now she cant stop begging for milk at all hours! It's very frustrating. Hopefully trying again in a few months will prove successful.

great article and very helpful tips. I feel much more comfortable when it comes to weaning my bably and will have to use some of the tips when we get there.

A friend of mine weaned in an almost accidental way: she had to be away from her daughter for a full week while her mother-in-law watched her. By the time the week was over, she said her daughter had forgotten all about nursing!

I am having mixed emotions about weaning. When I began to nurse it was so hard for me and painful and I could not imaging continuing for even 6 months. Now that time to wean is coming soon, I think I might miss the closeness.

My little one is 10 1/2 mths old and does use a sippy cup at meals and love to eat should I start weaning now since she is interested in food/cups or should I wait till closer to a year? Do I give a cup of milk at other times during the day or just at meal times? Been way too long since I had to do any of this and would like to be reminded.

How do you wean a almost 12 month old that pretty much likes to play and eat during feedings?
