When it comes to potty readiness, age is nothing but a number! But how can you tell if your child is really ready to ditch the diapers?

My 2.5 year old wee man checks off a good amount of those 15 signs - but he just won't sit to go – especially #2. We've had a few lucky moments in the morning when he sees he's older brother going pee, but other then that - nothing.

My 13mth old follows me to the toilet, he stays with me until I'm finished. He even flushes for me. Does this mean he's ready for the potty.

My 3 years likes to seat on the potty, and be a big girl. But she absolutely refuses to let the diaper go, she always wants to put it back after the potty.. don't know what to do?

My 22 month old started showing signs of wanting to start potty training when he was 18 months old. We sit him down on it everyday and he gets really excited about it but still nothing yet. We just keep telling him it will happen and that it was a great attempt.

My 2 1/2 year old little boy showed all the signs but refused the potty for months, so I moved the potty in to the living room and within two days he was trained.

i find you have many good ideas, like encouraging them to be big and doing the same stuff as mommy and daddy. also reading while potty training and having stickers as a reward. there's one thing i don't believe, however, and it is that kids need be left alone when they don't cooperate with potty training. when we establish rules like 'don't throw objects inside the house', u cant let them when they're stubborn about it. if kids start to be used to go on the potty in early age, the transition will be less drastic then showing them the potty at the age of 2. also if we change the routine of sitting every morning on the bowl- because he decided he didn't want anymore- he might even think its his decision to get clean or not

Great Article! Anyway I already started to let him actually sit with me on the toilet seat since he was 3 months and now he is 14 months, I want to get him a potty seat so he can sit by himself. And this actually works very well. Every time he needs to go, he actually tap on this bum with his 2 hands and I would ask him you want "poo poo" he nodded his head. So start early and he will get use to it. I started when he was 3 months! So since then I very seldom have to change a dirty & stinky diaper anymore.

I have three girls and each one approached the whole idea of potty training very differently. The first was a piece of cake and took to it almost immediately, the second, long and drawn out and at times seemed like it would never happen. My third is just starting at 20 months. There is no one solution that will work for every child. The best thing you can do to help them along is be positive and let them proceed at a pace they are comfortable with. Be there for them and celebrate every step in the right direction.

Great article! I basically put the potty out when my first was 18 months old. She got familiar with it and I brought her to the bathroom with me too which made her want to try with me. By the age of 2 she was peeing in it, 2.5 she was trained (excpet for nights). Her younger sister is 18 months and shows a lot of interest in it now too :)

Review 20 for Ready For The Potty Party

Our little J is now 2 and although we tried potty training him several times before he really had no interest AT ALL eventhough he was showing many of these signs. So we backed off and figured we would try again when he was ready. Then just last week, he came to us and told us he wanted to wear his big boy underwear, so how could we refuse. He is now wearing his big boy underwear around the house and making it to the potty every 2 out of 3 times. Accidents happen but the proud look on his face when he makes it to the potty on time are so worth it. It won't be long now.....WE HOPE!!!! Good luck to all you mom's & dad's and little ones on your potty training journey. As my grandmother told me, he won't graduate from highschool still wearing diapers so don't push if he isn't ready. :)
